ALTAMONT PASS AREA — A roadway improvement proposal at the eastern approach to Altamont Pass could change how drivers move through the intersection of West Grant Line Road and Altamont Pass Road.

Where are the two roundabouts planned?

The California State Clearinghouse record for the Grant Line Road Roundabouts Project describes two proposed circular intersections: one at West Grant Line Road and Altamont Pass Road, and another at West Grant Line Road and Mountain House Road. The project is led by the City of Mountain House, immediately east of the Altamont Pass corridor.

Existing intersections are controlled by stop signs. The proposal aims to reduce excessive queues and delays. It would require acquisition of additional right-of-way because the currently available road space is insufficient for the planned layouts.

What happened in 2026?

The state received a Notice of Determination on May 1, 2026, documenting City of Mountain House approval on April 29, after environmental review. The notice explains that the work will also require approvals from Alameda County, making the project relevant to people traveling through the unincorporated Altamont area even though the lead city is in San Joaquin County.

Are drivers using roundabouts already?

The approval notice does not verify that either roundabout has been built, that traffic has switched to a new pattern or that a particular detour is active on October 31. Construction and any subsequent access restrictions must be confirmed through the relevant road agencies.

Residents can follow Mountain House’s official approved-projects page and Alameda County for updated plans. The state notice lists planner Harold Holland, 209-831-5666, as a contact.
