ALTAMONT PASS, Alameda County — State environmental records document storm-damage repairs to Interstate 580, including work on slopes and drainage infrastructure near the Altamont corridor.

What work is covered?

The California State Clearinghouse filing, SCH 2026020271, was received on February 9, 2026. The notice describes work to restore damaged slopes, a retaining wall and three storm-drain systems to protect the integrity of the highway’s embankment.

The locations include portions of eastbound I-580 around post miles 4.62 and 4.76–4.83 and westbound I-580 around post miles 4.24–4.67, all within the Altamont USGS map area. These precise references are more useful to residents and freight operators than a generic description of a project somewhere along the entire interstate.

Why wildlife is part of a highway repair

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife says the work involves habitat for the California tiger salamander, a state-listed threatened species. It documents expected temporary and permanent impacts to a small amount of habitat and an incidental-take authorization with conditions.

The notice describes approximately 1.368 acres of short-term temporary habitat loss, 0.632 acres of longer-lasting temporary loss and 1.610 acres of permanent loss. These are the agency’s project impact estimates, not measured highway closures or acreage of damaged pavement.

Are lanes closed this weekend?

The February environmental filing is not a current lane-closure bulletin. It does not establish whether any specific shoulder or travel lane is unavailable on October 31 or whether all repairs have been finished. Drivers should use Caltrans QuickMap for current lane information.

For project-environment questions, CDFW lists contact R3CESA@wildlife.ca.gov; Caltrans identifies lead-agency contact Mariam Farrar at 510-286-5580.
